Course Descriptions

İLF 101 Introduction to Communication: The main aim of the course is to define what communication is and let students evaluate the concept of communication with a historical perspective.

İLF 111 History of Culture: The aim of the course is to introduce the conception of culture, to explain the meaning of civilizations’ places and roles, and also instruct to students the fact that in the terms of designed deciplines the cultural past is the only tool to find new advancement. Additionally, make a comparison between civilization’s technologies, trades, science, faith and art/artisanship activities.

İLF 171 Turkish I: The aim of this course is to let students learn about Turkish language, its uses, syntax preventing from miss-uses.

İNG 101 English I: It is an elementary course. The main aim of the course is to prepare students for their occupation. In addition to this, the curriculum covers subjects for elemantary level.

AİT 101 Principles of Atatürk’s l: The course examines the recent Ottoman history and the process of renewal that the Ottoman state had entered since the middle of the 19th century and the collapse of this process, the history of national struggle and the emergence of the idea of national independence.

KHM 102 Introduction to Law: This course’s aim is instruct the students about theorotical field of law and educate them on general law’s knowledge.

EKON 111 Principles of Economy: Economics and scare sources problem, factors of production, demand and supply, market equilibrium, elasticity, consumer preferences, production and cost, main market types, GDP, aggregate demand and aggregate supply, product market, monetary system, monetary and fiscal policies, inflation and growth, international trade.

İLF 133 Life in University I: This course aims to teach to the students the life of university and campus; and to help them to understand the culture of university.

İLF 108 History of Communication: The course gives a general outline of Turkish and European journalism as well as the social, economic, political and cultural roots of the printing press.

SOS 122 Sociology: Sociology, or social science, is the study of society and human interaction. Social (sociological) research ranges from the relationships between different individuals encountered on the street to global social processes. The discipline focuses on why and how people live regularly in a society, as well as how individuals or members of associations, groups or institutions live.

Sociology is in close contact with sciences and organizations such as religion, hierarchical structures, social psychology, art, economics, law, environment, etc.

İLF 172 Turkish II: The aim of this course, which is a continuation of İLF171, is to improve the Turkish of students and to increase their basic knowledge of the language.

AİT 102 Principles of Atatürk’s ll: Besides the philosophical foundations of Ataturk's principles historic events up to the establishment of the Republic of Turkey, the basic meaning and form of interpretation in the light of contemporary developments founded on the Turkish modernization are the focus of this course.

İNG 102 English II: The aim of this course, which is a continuation of ING101, is to improve the professional English of students and to increase their basic knowledge of English.

RTS 101 Introduction to TV and Radio: The aim of this course is to define and explain historiacal evolution of radio and tv.

RTS 331 History of Cinema: Students will gain an understanding and appreciation of the origins and history of film by considering film history from a narrative, social and aesthetic point of view. They will grasp an understanding of the technological advances and changes throughout history and learn about the directors who helped shape world cinema. Students will learn to appreciate the global scope of film history through discussions in class with assigned films to watch from around the world.

İLF 134 Life in University II: This course aims to teach to the students the life of university and campus; and to help them to understand the culture of university.

İLF 208 Political Science: This course aims to develop students’ understanding of political science. Students are expected to take active roles in the learning process and make presentations about different ideologies.

İLF 217 Communication Theories: The aim of the course is to help students see the intricacies of the communication field in which they will be spending most of their professional time.

RTS 203 Radio Programme Making: Bu derste radyoda program yapım teknikleri, yapım aşamaları ve bu aşamalarda dikkat edilmesi gereken kurallar bütünü ve program türleri ve yayın ilkelerinin ayrıntılarıyla açıklanması üzerinde durulmaktadır.

RTS 422 Lighting and Camera: Students who learn basic production and management criteria are subjected to practical training in this course. Two of the important elements that support production and management in television are Light and Camera. In this course, students learn about the level of light needed by the camera, lighting methods inside and outside the studio by using the tools directly. The use of light in motion pictures is shaped in the context of the psychological atmosphere the director wants to create. Different lighting and shooting techniques should be applied to reflect the psychological state of the movie characters.

Which elements of the scene are intended to be emphasized,

Through whose eyes or from what angle we see the scene,

How the characters or objects in the scene are differentiated from each other,

What emotion is intended to be given with the harshness and color of light.

The course focuses on these basic facts.

GZT 209 Basic PhotographyThe course consists by basic steps of photography, introduction of camera, shooting a photo, teaching chemical bathing and printing process.

RTS 329 Turkish Cinema: The birth of Yeşilçam cinema will be studied. Capital structure, script, actors, actresses, audience, seats and all other matters related with Turkish cinema will be analysed. Sociology of cinema will also be studied. Different trends and generations, the influence of world cinema on Turkish cinema and the change after 1980 will be scrutinised.

İLF 202 Sociology For CommunicationThis course presents students fundamental concepts and issues in sociology and connects them to communication studies.

RTS 333 Contemporary Turkish Cinema: This course is complement of RTS329. This course will focus on the transition era between Post-Yeşilçam and New Film Makers, and especially on the epoch of post-1980’s.

RTS 241 Editing I: The aim of this course is educate student on visual asthetic within the editing process, and teach them functions and goals of editing with practical experiences.

RTS 244 Cinematography: The course will explain what type of elements creates a movie, and relationships between these elements. Also it will introduce the terminology of cinematography and basic conceptions.

İLF 303 Research Methods in Social Sciences: Research Methods for Media Studies provides students with the tools they need to perform critically engaged, theoretically informed research using methods that include interviewing, focus groups, historical research, oral histories, ethnography and participant observation, and textual analysis. Each chapter features step-by-step instructions that integrate theory with practice, as well as a case study drawn from published research demonstrating best practices for media scholars. Students will also find in-depth discussions of the challenges and ethical issues that may confront researchers using a qualitative approach. Qualitative research does not offer easy answers, simple truths or precise measurements, but this course provides a comprehensive and accessible guide for those hoping to explore this rich vein of research methodology.

İLF 310 Law of Communication: This course presents students fundamental concepts and issues in communication law with the aim of helping them develop an understanding of how legal systems function.

RTS 301 Internal Intership I: Students will have the chance to put every thing they have learned so far during their insternship. Internal internship can be practiced at NEU FM, NEU TV, NEU News Centre, graphic lab and photoshop labs. During their internship, students will have the chance to follow every phase of a radio and TV program making.

RTS 325 Reporting for Radio and TV: Because of the characterstics of radio and TV, news reporting is much different than in print media. This course will scrutinises radio and TV news report writing and it also provides some practical exercises.

RTS 431 Short Film Making: The course aims to educate students on the making of short films. Students will study how to make a short film from production process to screening process.

İLF 311 Public Opinion Research: Public Opinion Research, is a survey research which has been specializing in survey research. Public Opinion Research has been providing survey and market research to over corporations, non-profit organizations, government agencies, public officials and professional associations. The conducts public attitude surveys; focus groups; demographic studies and market research for development projects, publications, business groups, banks, communities and country clubs.

İLF 341 Research of Mass Media: Mass communication is the study of how people and entities relay information through mass media to large segments of the population at the same time. In other words, mass communication refers to the imparting and exchanging of information on a large scale to a wide range of people. It is usually understood to relate newspaper, magazine, and book publishing, as well as radio, television and film, even via internet as these mediums are used for disseminating information, news and advertising. Mass communication differs from the studies of other forms of communication, such as interpersonal communication or organizational communication, in that it focuses on a single source transmitting information to a large number of receivers. The study of mass communication is chiefly concerned with how the content of mass communication persuades or otherwise affects the behavior, attitude, opinion, or emotion of the person or people receiving the information.

RTS 205 TV Programme Making: This course covers subjects such as: types of TV programmes, how to produce a TV programme, budget, research, writing the synopsis, shooting, editing, and all the phases of a TV programme.

RTS 302 Internal Intership II: This is the sequel of RTS301. It is expected that students will use the facilities of the faculty and improve their skills.

İLF 413 Media Ethics: This course aims to establish the importance of the philosophy of ethics in communication and media studies. The course begins with introducing the central questions and discussions on ethics and morality and continues to elaborate on the role of ethics as a philosophy in media and communication practices, in analyzing media structures and use and control of new media technologies.

İLF 431 Political Communication: Introduction to theory and practice of political communication; role of media in political campaigns, press-government relations and policymaking; implications for media, politicians and the public. Impact of the media on American politics through their interactions with political actors and involvement in the policymaking process; use of strategic political communication in government, and the media’s role in spotlighting policy problems and suggesting policy solutions.

RTS 321 Applied TV Studies:  It gives information on lighting, sound, decoration, how to use camera, editing, as well as how to make an interview, makeup, and anchoring.

RTS 407 Film Genres: The course introduces some issues like film genres, how it came into being, in relation to the question of “genre”.

RTS 341 Script Writing: The first part of the course will focus on elements of a script, creating a story and characters. The second part of the course will focus on developing a story, character development and how to turn all these into a script.

İLF 405 Cultural Studies: Cultural Studies is an interdisciplinary field. Drawing on the sociological end of the cultural studies, this course focuses on diverse perspectives on culture and society. We will examine different theoretical positions in relation to culture and media including, the rise of mass culture, ideology and cultural hegemony, popular culture, feminism, racism, and social resistance. We will ground theory in both the practice of doing cultural studies and the production of media texts.

İLF 444 Communication and Modernity: This course is an introduction to the formation and prospects of modernity and postmodernity and to the communication aspects of these processes. The course will start with the formation of modernity going back to its roots in Enlightenment, and proceed to the development of modern state, media, and changing class, gender and race divisions in this process. The course will then move to globalization and modernity/postmodernity covering topics such as social media, politics and power. Students are expected to develop an understanding of modernity/postmodernity and to be able to make sense of contemporary society with a critical perspective.

RTS 406 Film, Criticism And Analysis: Film criticism is a course that aims to give students a critical point of view. In that regard, the relationship between the visual materials, sound, colours, camera angles, the cultural context will be discussed through examples.

RTS 440 Department Project: Final projects is the most significant course of the programme. In this course, each student will demonstrate/screen his/her own graduation project and has to defend it in front of the faculty jury.
